Sunday 30th April 2023: last day open finals at 32nd World Pilot Gig Championships

As my races were over had a great day following the open women’s and men’s races. The day started foggy but for the final cleared up and was very sunny and warm. Coverack had a great result in the mens A who came second and womens A who came fifth. The younger B teams also did well. See a few photos below the final A teams coming in to the other boats before them with their oars up was quite a spectacle.

The evening consisted with the award πŸ₯‡ ceremony followed by a sing song 🎡 of sea shanties in the Scillonian with my Coverack team members. Arrived back at campsite ⛺️ early in the morning for last but one night. However the water tap next me broke after someone came for water and had to call out Jared from Garrison to fix it with a hose attachment and ended up in the tent ⛺️ at 2.30am for a well deserved sleep. Great event and look forward to next year hopefully representing my new gig club – Penzance and Newlyn Pilot Gig Club (PNPGC).

Saturday 29th April 2023: Day 3 Nut Rock race for Supervets

Morning still foggy but we hoped that things clear up. Coverack SV crew ready for action. We rowed out in the fog and lined up in our groups for the shorter 2.15km Nut Rock race. We were group B and waited for our group to come forward. We had a great start but somehow we were slower than yesterday but a good race against clubs. All I could see was one boat on the stroke side all others were on the bow side. The strava information is shown below which was started before

So after this race our final position was 23 out of 42 as shown below.

A very great result and enjoyed rowing πŸš£β€β™€οΈ for Coverack SV team in this great Competition. As this is my first Scillies, I look forward to next year after taking part in more races on the regatta circuits. The rest of the day I watched the open for the rest of the day where both Coverack women and men both A and B teams did well especially both A teams which were in the top 5 for the first two races. Looking forward to the finals tomorrow. In the evening met up with my PNPGC colleagues as well as Coverack team.

Friday 28th April 2023: First day of racing at the 2023 World Gig Rowing Championships

Day one of gig racing at the 2023 world 🌍 gig rowing πŸš£β€β™€οΈ championships on St Mary’s in Scillies. The womans and mens vets & supervets races took place in the afternoon. Two races St Agnes and Nut Rock that are 2.94km and 2.1km respectively as shown below

After breakfast in the tunnel helped Coverack team get their two boats namely Morah & Manacle Bell from their trailers to the beach ready for racing in the afternoon. We will be rowing πŸš£β€β™€οΈ in Morah and was getting excited πŸ˜†

Our Supervets race on the longer 2.94 km St Agnes one was the fourth one in the afternoon after the Ladies vet, supervets and the mens vets. In the Coverack SV team there was the first time we rowed together as a full team with Sophie as cox, Martin in 6, Jonathan in 5, Gary in 4, Pete in 3, me in 2 and Andy in 1. After over a 3km relaxed row out to the start line with a few start practices we made our way to the start line in rather foggy weather with a small choppy sea. The start was rather slow but the rest of the race was good πŸ‘ on this longer race. We were delighted to come 21st out of 42.

The race information on strava is as follows:

Some photos from my team mates after the race

We we schedule to race the second shorter 2.15km race later in the afternoon however the fog came in after the men’s vet race and our was cancelled and rescheduled in the morning before the open starts. For the rest of the evening met with Steve my crew mate from PNPGC before returning for a sleep 😴 in my bijou tent ⛺️

Thursday 27th April 2023: Day 2 camping on Scillies before the gig racing

After a sleep 😴 in the bijou tent waking to foggy and mizzly day. This turned into torrential 🌧️. Took refuge in the kitchen area which started to flood outside. Felt sorry for teams arriving and having to put their tents up. Andy and Pete, my Coverack SV team mates who are also camping arrived and put their tents up. For rest of day once rain subsided went into town to get some food and taking in the atmosphere of the event as the town filled with gig rowers.
