Friday 28th April 2023: First day of racing at the 2023 World Gig Rowing Championships

Day one of gig racing at the 2023 world ๐ŸŒ gig rowing ๐Ÿšฃโ€โ™€๏ธ championships on St Mary’s in Scillies. The womans and mens vets & supervets races took place in the afternoon. Two races St Agnes and Nut Rock that are 2.94km and 2.1km respectively as shown below

After breakfast in the tunnel helped Coverack team get their two boats namely Morah & Manacle Bell from their trailers to the beach ready for racing in the afternoon. We will be rowing ๐Ÿšฃโ€โ™€๏ธ in Morah and was getting excited ๐Ÿ˜†

Our Supervets race on the longer 2.94 km St Agnes one was the fourth one in the afternoon after the Ladies vet, supervets and the mens vets. In the Coverack SV team there was the first time we rowed together as a full team with Sophie as cox, Martin in 6, Jonathan in 5, Gary in 4, Pete in 3, me in 2 and Andy in 1. After over a 3km relaxed row out to the start line with a few start practices we made our way to the start line in rather foggy weather with a small choppy sea. The start was rather slow but the rest of the race was good ๐Ÿ‘ on this longer race. We were delighted to come 21st out of 42.

The race information on strava is as follows:

Some photos from my team mates after the race

We we schedule to race the second shorter 2.15km race later in the afternoon however the fog came in after the men’s vet race and our was cancelled and rescheduled in the morning before the open starts. For the rest of the evening met with Steve my crew mate from PNPGC before returning for a sleep ๐Ÿ˜ด in my bijou tent โ›บ๏ธ

Thursday 27th April 2023: Day 2 camping on Scillies before the gig racing

After a sleep ๐Ÿ˜ด in the bijou tent waking to foggy and mizzly day. This turned into torrential ๐ŸŒง๏ธ. Took refuge in the kitchen area which started to flood outside. Felt sorry for teams arriving and having to put their tents up. Andy and Pete, my Coverack SV team mates who are also camping arrived and put their tents up. For rest of day once rain subsided went into town to get some food and taking in the atmosphere of the event as the town filled with gig rowers.

Took Late morning Scillonian Ferry from Penzance to St Mary’s for the Scillies World ๐ŸŒŽ Gig Rowing Championships. Set up the bijou tent lent to me from my Buddy Graham at Garrison campsite . Also helped Pat from Mounts Bay put her tent up. In the evening went down to town to get a pizza as the Mermaid and Atlantic was packed. Went onto the Scillonian club to watch West Ham game and a few beers ๐Ÿป.

Sunday 23th April 2023: PNPGC Long endurance row to Mousehole and towards Lamorna and back in

A nice endurance ๐Ÿ’ช row from Penzance harbour into Mousehole harbour and then towards Lamorna and back. Cox: Julie, 6: Jemima, 5:,Emma, 4: Me, 3: Steve, 2:Alison, 1: Sarah. Calm in the bay and a bit choppy after Mousehole. Great row in preparation for Scillies.

Thursday 20th April 2023: Quick interval training blast on Ergrow machine

imputed the above interesting magnificent seven interval into the PM5. However missed out the rest period after 400m, so pace a little out but pleased ๐Ÿ˜ƒ as times are coming down to below 2min/500m in places. Last 100 m in particular due to better technique on the machine.

Tuesday 18th April 2023: CGC Supervets Scillies Team Gig Row

Nice gig training gig row with CGC Supervets team with a fill in for Martin with Pete’s son. Cox : Tim, 6: Ted, 5: Jon, 4: Gary, 3: Pete, 2: Me, 1: Andy. Lovely sunny day with a slight easterly wind. Rowed out of the Falmouth harbour into more choppy seas. Then did two full race practice with starts that simulated the Scillies Championship race distances. That is St Agnes – around 3km and Nut Rock around 2.2km. Good crew practice for Scillies Gig Championship with the mini Scillies at Helford with the full crew and Sophie as Cox. No photos due to too busy rowing๐Ÿ˜…

Friday 14th April 2023: Two Concept2-RowErg interval sessions with strength fitness session

Nice couple of Concept2 RowErg training sessions of just over 2600m. Bringing the times down with better breathing ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ. Can’t wait to get back on the water ๐Ÿšฃโ€โ™€๏ธ tomorrow morning as weather looks better for a good crew row. Followed this session with several strength ๐Ÿ’ช exercises with dumbbells and barbell weights for legs, core, arms etc. Two weeks to the Gig World Championships in the Scillies
