Day one of gig racing at the 2023 world ๐ gig rowing ๐ฃโโ๏ธ championships on St Mary’s in Scillies. The womans and mens vets & supervets races took place in the afternoon. Two races St Agnes and Nut Rock that are 2.94km and 2.1km respectively as shown below
After breakfast in the tunnel helped Coverack team get their two boats namely Morah & Manacle Bell from their trailers to the beach ready for racing in the afternoon. We will be rowing ๐ฃโโ๏ธ in Morah and was getting excited ๐

Our Supervets race on the longer 2.94 km St Agnes one was the fourth one in the afternoon after the Ladies vet, supervets and the mens vets. In the Coverack SV team there was the first time we rowed together as a full team with Sophie as cox, Martin in 6, Jonathan in 5, Gary in 4, Pete in 3, me in 2 and Andy in 1. After over a 3km relaxed row out to the start line with a few start practices we made our way to the start line in rather foggy weather with a small choppy sea. The start was rather slow but the rest of the race was good ๐ on this longer race. We were delighted to come 21st out of 42.

The race information on strava is as follows:

Some photos from my team mates after the race

We we schedule to race the second shorter 2.15km race later in the afternoon however the fog came in after the men’s vet race and our was cancelled and rescheduled in the morning before the open starts. For the rest of the evening met with Steve my crew mate from PNPGC before returning for a sleep ๐ด in my bijou tent โบ๏ธ
After a sleep ๐ด in the bijou tent waking to foggy and mizzly day. This turned into torrential ๐ง๏ธ. Took refuge in the kitchen area which started to flood outside. Felt sorry for teams arriving and having to put their tents up. Andy and Pete, my Coverack SV team mates who are also camping arrived and put their tents up. For rest of day once rain subsided went into town to get some food and taking in the atmosphere of the event as the town filled with gig rowers.
